Professor Tracie R. Porter, as Director of the Business Law Center (BLC), represented Western State at the Black Entertainment and Sports Law Association’s (BESLA) 35th Annual Conference from October 21-25. Professor Porter is a member of BESLA. The conference featured panels on representing celebrity clients and athletes, including financial planning and business management, and was attended by almost 250 lawyers, financial advisors, business managers, and celebrities, such as actress Vanessa Knight, Judge Eric Mathis, and former NBA player Antoine Walker. Professor Porter hopes to expand the mission of the BLC to include all areas of business and law.
Professor Porter also attended the NAACP Legal Defense Fund’s (LDF) 75th Anniversary at the Ford Foundation in New York, in September. LDF alumni attorneys, scholars, and supporters celebrated with LDF’s President Director-Counsel Sherrilyn Ifill and her staff. As an LDF Scholar from 1991-94, Professor Porter had received a scholarship to attend law school. Professor Porter also visited Fordham Law School’s Fashion Law Institute while in New York and met with Dean Penelope Andrews, new Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Cape Town, South Africa’s premier law school, about building relationships and creating opportunities for students in the BLC and the law school generally.
