Tracie Porter Attends John M. Langston Bar Association of Los Angeles Installation, Student Is Awarded Scholarship

Professor Tracie R. Porter attended the 40th Annual Installation, Scholarship & Awards Gala for the John M. Langston Bar Association of Los Angeles at the Beverly Hills Hilton on January 30, to support mentee and student Briahna Chuvac. Addressing the approximately 1000 attendees from the stage, Ms. Chuvac thanked Professor Porter and Western State.  Ms. Chuvac, who was honored alongside students from UCLA, USC, and Loyola, is the current President of Black Law Student Association, of which Professor Porter is Faculty Advisor.

Tracie Porter Appointed to 2016 Fall Meeting Steering Committee for ABA International Law Section

Professor Tracie R. Porter was appointed to the 2016 Fall Meeting Steering Committee for the ABA International Law Section to be hosted in Tokyo, Japan in October 2016. The International Law Section hosts its fall meeting outside the U.S. Professor Porter is Co-Chair of the Academic Subcommittee along with her Japanese Co-Chair Kozo Yabe, an adjunct at the University of Illinois College of Law, and partner and patent attorney of Yuasa & Hara in Tokyo, Japan. Professor Porter has been an active leader in the section, serving as Vice-Chair and Steering Committee Member for several committees of the section, including Financial Products & Services, Cross-Border Real Estate Practice, and China Committees. Formerly, Professor Porter taught law courses in China.

 

Team Coached by Eunice Park Wins National Juvenile Law Moot Court Competition

2Ls Ruby Becker and Keith Gallarzo, coached by Professor Eunice Park, won the 21st Annual National Juvenile Law Moot Court Competition, held at Whittier Law School on February 5-6. In a particularly competitive year with 22 teams competing, Keith also won Fifth Place Oral Advocate in the Preliminary Rounds and Second Place Oral Advocate after the Quarter-Finals.  The final round was adjudicated by the Honorable Michael Levanas, Presiding Judge of the Los Angeles Juvenile Courts; the Honorable Craig E. Arthur, of the Orange County Superior Court, currently sitting in a juvenile dependency assignment; the Honorable Teresa Sullivan, of the Los Angeles County Superior Court who serves in the Edmund D. Edelman Children’s Court; and Dean Penelope Bryan, of Whittier Law School.
